ABOUT
All in for the extreme long distance races
I've had a lot of time to think it over. How I would go about it, once on my own. But there was really no question: it had to be the extreme long distances. The "grote routes", as Noël Peiren describes them so beautifully.
As a 13 year old, I used to join my father on trips to Noël Peiren, in hopes of securing our first real long-distance pigeons. Unfortunately, father already perceived races ranging from 500 to 600km to be extreme long distance.
I've grown up with the "50" from Coutteau, the "Tee" form Denys, the "Freddy" and the "Witneus" from Florizoone, the "Kleine Didi" from Devos and the "Artiest-Barcelona" and "Prins-Barcelona" from Peiren.Â
I looked up to those athletes. To my father's "Goeie Rosten" - with its 11 prizes on Arras (100km) - just a little less.Â
Watching "Marathon Man" come home at dusk, after 15 hours of flying from Narbonne - which was ultimately awarded 15th national, or witnessing "Little Magic" win 4th national Pau in the rain and with a very cold northern wind, meant I was sold for life.Â
Frankly, everything I do in my lofts is in favour of the extreme long distance races.
